Master the French word le souvenir

In French, le souvenir means “memory,” “remembrance,” or “souvenir.” This word captures both the mental act of remembering and the physical objects we keep to preserve memories. It’s a deeply emotional word that appears in conversations about the past, nostalgia, and the keepsakes we treasure.

Latin “subvenire” (to come to mind, to occur to one)

→ Old French: “sovenir” (to remember, to come to mind)

→ Modern French: “souvenir” (memory, remembrance, keepsake)

Le souvenir refers to both mental recollection of past events and physical objects kept as reminders.

Memory or recollection – Mental remembrance

• Past memory: J’ai un bon souvenir de cette époque. I have good memories of that time.

• Vague recollection: Je n’ai aucun souvenir de cet événement. I have no memory of that event.

Keepsake or memento – Physical object

• Tourist souvenir: J’ai acheté un souvenir à Paris. I bought a souvenir in Paris.

• Sentimental keepsake: Ce bijou est un souvenir de ma grand-mère. This jewelry is a keepsake from my grandmother.

Act of remembering – Remembrance

• In memory of: En souvenir de… In memory of…

• Remembrance: Le souvenir des disparus. The remembrance of the departed

• Don’t confuse “souvenir” (noun) with “se souvenir” (verb):

Le souvenir = “memory” or “souvenir.”

Se souvenir = “to remember.” (it is a reflexive verb).

Je me souviens de toi. I remember you. (verb – needs “me”)

Je souviens de toi. (incorrect – missing reflexive pronoun “me”)

• Don’t forget “de” after “se souvenir”: The verb “se souvenir” always requires the preposition “de” before what you remember.

Je me souviens de ce jour. I remember that day. (correct)

Je me souviens ce jour. (incorrect – missing “de”)

• Don’t use “rappeler” when you mean “se souvenir”: Rappeler means “to remind” or “to call back,” not “to remember.” Use se souvenir for personal memory.

Je me souviens de son nom. I remember his name. (correct)

Je rappelle son nom. (incorrect – means “I’m reminding/calling back his name”)
