Learn French verb conjugations faster with just 3 key forms
If you’ve seen my French verb videos on social media, this is the system behind them.
You might feel that the more French tenses you learn, the harder it is to recall and use them.
Instead of gaining confidence, everything may start to feel scattered.
You will be pleased to know that this is not a memory problem but a structure problem.
A simpler way to understand French verbs
Did you know that Every French verb is built from just 3 unique key forms ?
- the nous form (present)
- the past element used in composed past tenses (we call it the past participle, eg in English done, taken, gone etc..)
- the future stem to express will
These forms don’t just belong to one tense — they reappear again and again across different tenses.
This is what allows French verb tenses to connect.
Most learners never realise this, which is why verbs continue to feel confusing, even after learning multiple tenses.
How French verb conjugations are actually built
The other particularity that many learners often don’t realise is that French verbs follow consistent templates.
Each tense is built from: one of these 3 key forms + a pattern you reuse.
- The key form gives you the meaning of the action.
- The pattern tells you who does the action and when
Once you start recognising this, verbs stop feeling disconnected — and begin to form a system you can rely on.
Unfortunately, the present tense is the most irregular one, and it does need to be learnt.
But the good news is that once you’ve worked through the present, other tenses become easier to understand because they follow clearer and more regular patterns.
Example
Let’s look at the irregular verb faire (to do / to make), which appears everywhere.
Instead of memorising every form, focus on its 3 key elements:
- nous faisons → remember: fais-
- fait (= done).
- fer‑
You will see these forms again across tenses— in predictable ways.
Why verbs still feel difficult
Most learners never realise this — which is why verbs continue to feel difficult, even after years of study.
After learning multiple tenses, many still feel:
- hard to recall
- difficult to organise
- easy to forget
That’s why progress often feels slower than it should
Understand the connections between French verb tenses
This is what a structured approach gives you:
- key forms to recognise
- patterns to reuse
- a clear way to see how tenses connect
This is what turns memorisation into understanding.
This is the moment it starts to click
You don’t need to learn everything — just the few forms that keep coming back.
And once you see this across different verbs and tenses, everything starts to fall into place.
This is the approach I use — and it has helped hundreds of learners, at every level, move from confusion to clarity.
