FAQ French language

French is spoken by more than 300 million people around the world. It is the official language in 29 countries: France, Belgium, Romandy region of Switzerland, Luxembourg, Monaco, Democratic republic of Congo, Madagascar, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Niger, Senegal, Mali, Rwanda, Guinea, Chad, Burundi, Benin, Togo, Central Africa Republic, Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Comoros, Equatorial Guinea, Djibouti, Seychelles, Vanuatu, Canada, Haiti and the French overseas regions of Guadeloupe, French Guinea, Martinique, Mayotte, reunion.

French is also prominent in Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, Louisiana, Maine, Lebanon, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam.

The differences lie mainly in the pronunciation and the vocabulary.  They are both influenced by neighbouring countries and local dialects.

In the Caribbean for e.g, there are numerous French based creole languages; in Lebanon, French and Arab are mixed to give the Franbanais; while in Quebec, French lexis is very developed to avoid the use of English…
